Arts Exploration (Five-Week Camps)

Five-week program in a fun, creative and nurturing environment. Students may be able to enroll in two different courses of study, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and the opportunity to explore additional art forms through Spotlight Workshops. Each of our Arts Exploration courses will culminate with a student showcase at our summer arts festival!

Arts Exploration (Five-Week Camps)

Dance

Ballroom (Ages 8 - 13)

The students will be introduced to the music and characteristic styling of the most popular ballroom and Latin dances. They will learn the basic patterns and steps of many social and competition dances such as cha cha, jive, swing, waltz, foxtrot, and salsa.

Music

Guitar (Ages 8 - 15)

Learn to play several styles of guitar, including classical, jazz. and flamenco, in this five week workshop. Students will be taught musical literacy and solid guitar technique through fun, interactive activities and lessons in a supportive, educational group setting. This workshop is open to current and incoming OCSA students and all students in the community. Student must provide their own instrument, unless otherwise specified.

Visual Arts

3D Design (Ages 11 - 15)

In this fun filled class, students will learn about creating sculptural art works. Students work in three dimensional form while exploring variety of mediums such as; clay, wood, plastic, paper mache, found objects, mixed media and etc. This class will challenge students through problem solving and critical thinking while they gain a deeper understanding of the three dimensional world. The class will culminate with a gallery style exhibition of student work for friends and family to enjoy.

Ceramics (Ages 8- 15)

This fun and engaging class challenges participants to experience their own creative process through the art of ceramics. Students will be introduced to ceramic studio terminology, explore the geological origins of clay and glazes, and learn the science behind how clay becomes ceramic.  Students will also be introduced to the elements of art and the principles of design, the historical and geographical context of ceramic art, hand building techniques, while creating functional ware and decorative pieces.

Figure Drawing (Ages 11 - 15)

This studio class is designed for students who want to improve their figure drawing skills. Working with a live model (partially clothed), students will address issues of surface anatomy, proportions, gesture and composition as well as the figure in an atmosphere.  Also, the use of light and dark (values), and mark-making will be a focus during this course.  The goal of this class is to help students improve their observational skills and to create strong finished drawings that will be a valuable part of their college portfolio.  Pencil, charcoal, conte, ink, pastels and paint are all possible materials used in this course.

Painting & Drawing (Ages 8 - 15)

In this fun filled class students will create artworks based on real-life observation and imaginative design.  Using step-by-step methods and creative problem solving, students will explore a variety of mediums and techniques for the purpose of building both their skill level and portfolios.  The class will culminate with a gallery style exhibition of student work for friends and family to enjoy.​​​​​​​

Creative Writing (Ages 8 - 15)

Students will be introduced to a broad spectrum of creative writing genres from poetry and fiction to dramatic writing. Through the five weeks students will work on creative writing fundamentals while developing their own creative voice.  Students will produce their own original work to be published in an anthology at the end of the session.

Digital Media

Animation (Ages 11 - 15)

Students will learn fundamentals of animation, how to create the illusion of life and movement through a variety of techniques and approaches while creating several short animated films. It is recommended to take this course in conjunction with the Character Design course.

Character Design (Ages 11 - 15)

Students will spend this camp redesigning and creating characters from scratch. Working primarily in Adobe Photoshop, emphasis will be on process and technique as students design everything needed to tell a compelling story, characters, clothing, tools, vehicles, animals and environments. It is recommended to take this course in conjunction with the Animation course.

Computer Graphic Design (Ages 11 - 15)

Students will learn how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to accomplish basic design projects such as a logo redesign, t-shirt design, posters and more! It is recommended to take this course in conjunction with the Video Game Design course.

Video Game Design (Ages 11 - 15)

Students will be walked through the process of designing and making their own video games. Students will design, build, and implement a couple of small video games while working in Adobe Photoshop and Flash. It is recommended to take this course in conjunction with the Computer Graphic Design Course.

Acting (Ages 8 - 13)

Students will be introduced to acting fundamentals in a fun, collaborative, and supportive environment in this five week acting camp.  They will practice monologues, scene work, and improvisation techniques as well as stretch their creative storytelling muscles while collaborating on an original piece that will be performed in our studio theater for their peers, friends and family.

Musical Theatre Review - Best of Broadway (Ages 8 - 15)

This is a pre-professional intensive musical theatre  program for the seasoned or beginning performer. It provides top notch training in acting, singing and dancing with our acclaimed OCSA musical theatre faculty.  This experience culminates in an original musical theatre performance for family and friends.  Join us for a glimpse of our comprehensive musical theatre program.

Shakespeare for Young Actors (Ages 8 - 15)

Through this 'Page to Stage' approach, students will be introduce to 'The world's greatest playwright', William Shakespeare. Through fun and accessible theatre games and improvisation, students will work with Shakespeare's wonderful language with emphasis on sonnets and scenes (such as 'A Midsummer Night's Dream). This class will culminate with showcase of students performances for friends and family to enjoy.

Summer Arts Enrichment (One-Week Intensives)

One-week intensive workshop that provides young artists a chance to develop important fundamental skills and hone their specific art form. These classes provide hands on, practical arts experience under the guidance of OCSA's renowned arts educators and master guest artists. Culinary Arts - Baking & Pastry (Ages 10 - 12)

This class focuses on the skills required for the art of baking and pastry. Students will be introduced to baking fundamentals, techniques, time management, problem solving and team work, to further build their confidence. Young chefs will learn to appreciate the aroma and taste of freshly baked goods, combined with the complementary flavors and textures of a well presented dessert.

Week One:  Cookies, Quick Breads, Breakfast treats, Brownies, Scones and Yeast doughs. 
Week Two:  Pies, Tarts, Custards, Flans, Mousses, Soufflés and Pate Choux
Week Three:  Plated desserts-Tiramisu, Cheesecake, Strawberry Shortcake, Baked Alaska and Trifle.

Culinary Arts - Introduction to a Commercial Kitchen (Ages 10 - 12)

Introduction to a commercial kitchen will begin by focusing on necessary skills and techniques used to produce high quality cuisine in a restaurant setting. This encompasses the use of equipment designed specifically for a commercial kitchen as well as home kitchen cooks that allow you to replicate a desired result using standard home equipment. Students are going to learn how to properly cook vegetables, proteins, and desserts using several different methods both classical and modern, this is to include braising, sautéing, poaching, roasting, and Sous vide. Students will also be introduced to how to design a composed plate using each weeks specific focus and tying them together. The final week will cover breads, pizza, puff pastry, pies and other simple desserts. The program is designed to not only teach the student how to cook but also to inspire them to try new things and experiment at home to create their own style of cooking.

Week one: Intro to a commercial kitchen, vegetable cookery, beans, rice, and legumes 
Week two: Cooking with proteins and creating a composed plate, fish, shellfish, beef, pork, and chicken.
Week three: Breads, pastry, and desserts.

Film Production Skills (Ages 11 - 15)

Learn film production skills alongside other future filmmakers. Under the guidance of film industry professionals and in collaboration with our summer Acting for the Camera students, these young storytellers will write, direct, and edit a short film. It is recommended to take this class in conjunction with the Television Production Skills class.

TV Production Skills (Ages 11 - 15)

Learn TV production skills from industry professionals. While working in a professional multi-camera television studio, students will receive a unique, hands-on experience while writing, directing, and editing short TV shows and news broadcasts.  The students in this class will work with the summer Acting for the Camera students. It is recommended to take this class in conjunction with the Film Production Skills class.

Acting for the Camera - Film (Ages 11 - 15)

Learn Film Acting skills in this fun one week intensive.  Under the guidance of seasoned film acting professionals and in collaboration with summer Film Production students, these young actors will gain the training and confidence necessary acting in front of the camera.  Actors will star in original short films which are screened at the conclusion of the workshop.  It is recommended to take this class in conjunction with Acting for the Camera – Television.

Production & Design Bootcamp (Ages 11 - 15)

A one-week intensive where students will get a chance to explore the arts and crafts in the entertainment industry focusing on makeup, lighting, costumes, construction, and set design. During this class students will get hands on experience as well as a great background in theatre arts.

Special Effects Makeup (Ages 11 - 15)

Learn the basics for a variety of special effects makeup design utilizing special paints, latex and derma wax techniques for creating effects like bloody gore, accident wounds and bullet wounds as well as character development for zombies or fantasy pieces and complementary hair designs. Included in the class fee is a Ben NYE Special Effects Make- Up kit that student can keep and utilize for any stage, film or television work in the future.

Voice

Sing OC! (Ages 8 - 15)

Songs of the World! SING OC! is a one-week vocal intensive program created for young singers. Each day begins and ends with learning choir songs from different parts of the world.  Students will also attend music classes with master teachers to improve their solo singing technique, musicianship, movement, and more. To top it all off, we will conclude our program with a concert featuring all of our singers. Join us for a great week of music, learning and fun!

Music

Jazz (Ages 11 - 15)

Keep your jazz skills fine-tuned with a one-week program designed to improve ensemble performance and improvisation ability. Daily activities include sight reading, jazz improvisation, exposure to numerous jazz styles, and jazz history. This program is open to current and incoming OCSA students and all students in the community. The workshop concludes with a concert on Friday evening. Students must provide their own instrument, unless otherwise specified.

Piano (Ages 8 - 15)

This one-week workshop is designed for all levels of piano students. Experience OCSA Piano Workshop in a challenging and supportive learning environment. Students will receive personalized instruction from the award winning faculty of the Piano Program at the Orange County School of Arts.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in solo performance opportunities, piano master classes, piano ensemble collaboration, piano functional skills, sight-reading classes and Master Classes taught by prominent guest artists. The Workshop will culminate with a grand recital featuring all participants.

This one-week workshop is designed for woodwind, brass, and percussion students. Visual Arts

Digital Illustration (Ages 11 - 15)

Learn the illustration and painting techniques of Photoshop. This course is an introduction to digital painting for a future career in Illustration or Animation. Coursework will cover color theory and basic design principles. Students will use a Wacom drawing tablet to draw and paint characters, props, and environments using Photoshop brushes and textures.  The instruction in this class would highly complement the instructional material in the Digital Photography class, so it is encouraged for students to take both.

Digital Photography / Photoshop (Ages 11 - 15)

This course teaches the fundamentals of digital photography, including camera operation, design, composition, lighting and the use of Photoshop editing software. Students will receive basic instruction, demonstration, and examples of strong successful Photography as well as group critiques. Students will go on daily walking field trips with the instructor.  The instruction in this class would highly complement the instructional material in the Digital Illustration class, so it is encouraged for students to take both.

Math 2/3 (Ages 12 - 16)

The Math 2/3 Enrichment course is intended to give incoming and returning students skills practice and application opportunities so that they come in ready for a successful entry into Math 2 or Math 3 in the Fall of the 2017-2018 school year. This class will provide assessment based skills practice tailored to students’ needs, to close gaps and strengthen existing foundational skills. Student will also complete fun and engaging experiments and projects that give them a chance to enrich and extend their concept knowledge and their reasoning abilities, working in a team environment. New incoming students will get exposure to our unique curriculum to ease the transition to math at OCSA.

*Pre-requisite: Completion of 6th grade math minimum.

Study Skills (Ages 12 - 14)

This class will prepare students, in a variety of ways, to perform more efficiently and effectively in middle and high school. The skills acquired in this course will act as key foundational skills for the rigorous schedule of a maturing student. Through creative lessons, hands-on projects, and plenty of practice, students will emerge as better time managers, organizers, and students. Topics covered in this course include:

College Essay Writing Workshop - Enrichment class for incoming Seniors only.

This class will include individual teacher and student small group peer assistance in: choosing appropriate essay topics, reviewing college essay appropriate literary and rhetorical devices, examining evidence used to support and enhance the essay, organization of content and essay format based upon prompt demands, and peer revision and editing sessions. Students will leave the class with at least one peer and AP Language and Composition teacher reviewed and edited essay ready for college submission.
